Iran

Persepolis was the capital of Persian kings from 550-330 BC and was declared a World Heritage site in 1979. It was purportedly one of the most lavish cities of it's time. It was sacked by Alexander the Great during his Persian campaign and went into decline thereafter. It was one of the first sites added to the World Heritage List.
